Los Angeles, California.— The entertainment and animation world is mourning the loss of Peter Cullen, the legendary Canadian voice actor best known for bringing Optimus Prime to life across generations of Transformers productions. Cullen d13d at the age of 85.

Born Peter Claver Cullen on July 28, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Cullen built an extraordinary career spanning television, movies, animation and video games.
His most iconic role arrived in 1984, when he became the original voice of Optimus Prime, the courageous leader of the Autobots in the animated Transformers television series.
Cullen once explained that the personality and commanding voice he created for Optimus Prime were inspired partly by his older brother, Larry Cullen, a former captain in the United States Marine Corps. That inspiration helped give the character the combination of strength, dignity and compassion that became recognizable around the world.
More than two decades after the original animated series, Cullen returned as Optimus Prime for the 2007 live-action Transformers movie directed by Michael Bay. He continued voicing the Autobot leader in numerous movies, animated productions and video games.
But Optimus Prime was far from his only memorable character.
Cullen also became known for voicing Eeyore, the famously gloomy but lovable donkey from the Winnie-the-Pooh universe. Beginning in the late 1980s, he portrayed Eeyore across multiple Disney television and animated projects.
His extensive career also included characters such as K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and Venger in Dungeons & Dragons. Cullen additionally contributed creature vocalizations to major Hollywood productions, including King Kong and Predator.
In more recent years, Cullen voiced Thaedus in the animated superhero series Invincible, introducing his unmistakable voice to another generation of viewers.
His contributions to entertainment were formally celebrated in 2023, when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. The honor was presented by longtime Transformers colleague Frank Welker, the legendary voice actor behind Megatron.
Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus Cullen, Claire Cullen, Pilar Cullen and Clay Cullen.
