The U.S. Department of Defense has confirmed the death of another American service member connected to recent attacks linked to Iran in the Middle East.
The soldier has been identified as Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, a 26-year-old U.S. Army service member from Glendale, Kentucky.
According to officials, Benjamin N. Pennington was injured on March 1 during an attack targeting a military installation in Saudi Arabia.
The strike was reportedly part of a broader series of attacks connected to the escalating conflict involving Iranian forces and U.S. military positions in the region.
The Department of Defense stated that Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington sustained critical injuries during the attack and was transported for medical treatment.
Despite efforts by military medical personnel, he later died from those injuries on Sunday, several days after the initial incident.
Military sources indicated that Benjamin N. Pennington had been stationed at a strategic radar site in Saudi Arabia, which forms part of the early warning missile defense system designed to detect potential missile launches and protect U.S. and allied forces in the region.
Officials explained that the installation where Pennington was serving plays a key role in monitoring aerial threats and providing advance alerts to defense systems throughout the Middle East.
The death of Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington increases the number of American service members who have died during the recent wave of attacks connected to Iran.
Earlier reports confirmed that several other soldiers had been killed in separate incidents during the same conflict.
Military leaders and government officials have expressed condolences to the family of Benjamin N. Pennington, recognizing his service and sacrifice while deployed overseas.
Residents in Glendale, Kentucky, where Pennington grew up, have also begun sharing messages honoring his life and military service as the community mourns the loss of the young soldier.
The Department of Defense stated that further details about the attack and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review as the investigation into the strike on the base in Saudi Arabia continues.
